Four Pillars of AI Evaluation
Every AI device is measured across these dimensions to deliver a complete picture of its AI capabilities:
Foundation
Hardware performance measured by NPU TOPS - the raw computational capacity that determines how much AI processing a device can handle.
Coverage
Capability breadth - how many standardized AI features the device supports across writing, vision, translation, summarization, and creative tools.
Execution
Delivery quality - whether AI features run natively on-device, through hybrid processing, or require cloud connectivity.
Maturity
Platform stability and ecosystem support - mature platforms offer consistent updates, proven reliability, and developer tool integration.
Understanding Our Research Confidence
Every recommendation includes transparency about the research quality. We assess how complete our AI capability research is for each device.
- High - 80%+ of capabilities researched
- Medium - 40-80% of capabilities researched
- Low - Under 40% of capabilities researched
- Research Pending - Limited or no capability research
Your trust matters: We clearly indicate when research is incomplete. Devices with "Research Pending" may have undiscovered capabilities not yet reflected in their ranking.
Methodology Details
Our Overall AI ranking uses a weighted composite score. Devices are evaluated within their category context - a laptop's AI strengths differ from a phone's.
Weight Distribution: Foundation (40%), Coverage (25%), Execution (20%), Maturity (15%)
Each device receives detailed explanations for its ranking position, including strengths, areas for improvement, and head-to-head comparisons with similar devices.
How Rankings Differ
Overall AI vs. Hardware Performance: Hardware rankings focus exclusively on NPU TOPS, while Overall AI considers the complete AI experience including software capabilities and platform maturity.
Use-Case Rankings: Specialized rankings for specific workflows (Productivity, Creativity, Privacy) prioritize relevant capabilities and execution modes over general performance.
Use Overall AI when: You want a balanced view of a device's total AI capability. Use specialized rankings when you have specific workflow requirements.
