Why It Exists

Language barriers prevent seamless communication in personal and professional contexts. Live Translation removes the need for a human translator or external device, enabling real-time multilingual conversations.

How It Works

Live Translation uses Apple Intelligence to provide real-time language translation during conversations, calls, and text interactions. The feature leverages on-device speech recognition and neural machine translation models for initial processing, with Private Cloud Compute enhancing accuracy for complex linguistic contexts. Live Translation works in FaceTime calls, regular phone calls, and in-person conversations through the Translate app. The feature supports both spoken and written translation, detecting the language automatically and providing translations with minimal latency.

User Workflow

• Open Translate app or start a FaceTime/phone call
• Select the two languages for translation
• Speak or type in your language
• The AI detects the language, transcribes, and translates
• Translation appears as text and/or is spoken aloud
• Conversation continues naturally with real-time back-and-forth

AI Processing Flow

On-device Apple Intelligence model performs initial speech recognition and translation using the Apple Neural Engine. For nuanced or complex content, the system may send the text to Private Cloud Compute for enhanced translation, with results cached locally. No raw audio is stored.

Basic translation latency is under 1 second on supported devices. Cloud-enhanced translation adds 2-5 seconds of latency. Accuracy is highest for English-Spanish, English-French, and other major language pairs.
