Improved Windows Search

Improved Windows Search uses AI to understand natural language queries and find files, apps, and content faster with on-device NPU processing on Windows Copilot+ devices.

Why It Exists

Users need to find files and content by describing what they need in natural language, not by remembering exact filenames or keywords.

How It Works

Improved Windows Search is Microsoft's AI-powered search system for Windows Copilot+ devices. Using on-device NPU processing, the system understands natural language queries to find files, apps, emails, and content across the device. Unlike traditional keyword search, the AI interprets intent, context, and semantic meaning. The system indexes content locally for fast, private search without cloud dependency.

Everyday Use Cases

  • Natural language search
  • Semantic file finding
  • App discovery
  • Email content search
  • Document content search
  • Cross-app content discovery
  • Offline search

User Workflow

  • User types a natural language query in the Windows search bar
  • AI interprets the query intent and context
  • System searches local index via NPU processing
  • Results are ranked by relevance
  • User selects the desired result

AI Processing Flow

Search queries are processed by on-device NPU models for natural language understanding. Semantic indexing uses AI to understand document content and context. The local index is maintained continuously. All processing is on-device without cloud upload. Search history is stored locally and can be cleared by the user.

Inputs / Outputs

Inputs:

  • Search queries
  • Indexed files
  • App metadata
  • Document content
  • Email content
  • User preferences
  • Search history

Outputs:

  • Search results
  • Ranked relevance
  • File paths
  • App suggestions
  • Content previews
  • Quick actions

Known Limitations

  • Indexing takes time during initial setup
  • May not find files in unsupported formats
  • Privacy requires local-only processing
  • Limited to local content only

Unsupported Scenarios

  • Network drive search
  • Cloud file indexing
  • Real-time collaboration
  • Multi-language query
  • Voice search integration

Performance Notes

Query processing in under 200ms on NPU; Index updates run continuously with under 1 percent CPU; Search results in under 1 second; Supports 15+ languages; Battery impact negligible
