Why It Exists

Users encounter text in physical environments that they need to read, translate, or save. Magic Text eliminates the need for separate scanning or translation apps by providing an integrated solution within the camera and gallery apps.

How It Works

Magic Text uses MagicOS AI's on-device optical character recognition (OCR) models to detect, extract, and translate text from real-world images. The feature can process text in photos of documents, signs, labels, and other surfaces, then provide editable text and translation options. It supports multiple languages and can handle various fonts and text styles.

Everyday Use Cases

• Translate a foreign-language sign while traveling
• Extract text from a printed document
• Copy text from a photo to the clipboard

User Workflow

• Open Camera app or Gallery on an Honor device
• Point at text or select an image with text
• Tap the Magic Text button
• AI detects and extracts text
• Review, copy, or translate the extracted text

AI Processing Flow

On-device OCR model detects text regions, recognizes characters, and performs language detection using the NPU. Translation of complex text may use cloud-based neural machine translation.

Known Limitations

• Requires Honor devices with NPU for on-device processing

Unsupported Scenarios

Performance Notes

Text extraction from photos completes in 1-3 seconds. Cloud translation adds 2-5 seconds depending on text length and network. Best accuracy on clear, high-resolution images.
